What More Do You Want??

This is an honest question - and maybe a bit of a rant - directed at modern conservatives. Seriously, what more do you want?

I hear a lot of complaining and whining from conservative family members and friends, particularly about Biden and wokeness and gun rights and Hollywood's agenda, etc. Is it just that you won't be satisfied until you've gotten EVERYTHING? Is having almost everything not enough? You won't rest until we live in a 1-party system, maintained and controlled by the GOP?

Because from where I'm sitting, we're living in a conservative golden age. You've won. You've got it all.

True, you have a Democrat in the White House, but he's a doddering old fool AND a lifelong moderate. If you think Biden is liberal, you don't have a clue what liberal is. He was literally chosen as vice-president by Obama to shore up the moderates and independents!

You own an unassailable majority on the Supreme Court thanks to 3 nominations by a corrupt 1-term ultra-conservative president. And they are decidedly an activist court, having spent the last two years systematically undoing decades of legal precedent on a variety of issues, and regularly striking down liberal- and Democratic-sponsored legislation.

You may like what they've done, but that doesn't change the fact that what they are doing is the dictionary definition of judicial activism - something I hear conservatives complain about constantly ... when it's liberal judges doing it. And it's judicial activism at the highest level.

As of this writing in 2023, you own the House of Representatives, with the Leader and the majority under the sway of an ultra-conservative caucus.

You own a majority - albeit slim - of state governors, 26 to 24. But a lot of the Democratic governors, like my own in Kentucky, are moderate like Biden, rather than hard left. Are any of the Republican governors moderate?

And then there are the state legislatures. Nebraska has a unicameral, nonpartisan legislature, so there are only 49 legislatures at issue here.

Out of around 7,000 total state lawmakers, Republicans have an 800-member advantage over Democrats. Overall, they control both chambers in 28 states, compared to only 19 states where Democrats control both chambers.

In 22 states, Republicans hold the legislature and the governor's office, compared to only 17 for the Democrats.

And finally, Republicans have veto-proof supermajorities in 20 states, compared to only 9 for the Democrats.

So again I ask, what more do you want? Isn't this enough? You've won! You've had extremely low taxes for over 30 years, and you've had a virtually unregulated free market system that has allowed you to get immeasurably richer. And that's happened because you've already moved the Democratic party into your corner on that issue - Democrats believe in low taxes and free markets as much as Republicans these days.

So I can only assume that in your conservative wet dream, you simply want a 1-party system. You want anything that you perceive as liberalism to be destroyed. You've won politics and economics, so now you're going after culture and society. You don't want debate and democracy, you want what you want, and even as you win fight after fight after fight, your appetite can't be sated. It's like you've taken your economic principle of never having enough money and applied it to politics. You can't get enough.

So tell me, what more do you want?

You put the arrow square in the bullseye with this post. The Republican Party is a party of hypocrisy and they are gradually taking this country back in time, destroying democracy in the process. I love your point about debate because debating requires intelligence and the ability to support your points with sound arguments. Sadly, the GOP is incapable of either.
And the Democratic Party has major issues as well. They cater to small minorities of the population, while enraging the majority, including democrats like myself. And they are going to run an old “has-been” politician in 2024 that clearly is incapable of running anything, especially one of the highest pressure jobs in all of the world.

I totally agree with you, Jimmie. It feels so helpless just watching everything fall apart.
